Affordable, effective French lessons for adults of all ages

Note: Registration for regular courses is now closed for the fall term. However, we continue to accept registrations for the small-group, intensive learning cell program.

ACAF offers affordable, effective conversation-based French courses for adult learners at all levels. Our instructors are obsessed with one goal:  bringing you to speak French naturally and with confidence. We believe that all other activities (reading, writing, listening, grammar) serve to support the development of speaking skills.

NEW!  Staring in September 2026, ACAF offer three different kinds of programs to better respond to your personal learning goals.

What do we mean by affordable?

Our course fees are a fraction of the cost of French classes offered by universities, school boards, private institutes or Alliance Française. We don’t have to pay for a physical location or the salary of administrators.

 What do we mean effective?

Hiring a private instructor is an inefficient and expensive way to learn a language. The best way is to be part of a group of motivated learners at your level, guided by a teacher who knows how language learning works.  Our small class size and well-formed groups will get you speaking from the start!

• Courses are delivered by qualified, experienced French teachers who use communicative language teaching methods
• The focus is on speaking practice — grammar is presented when necessary, and then immediately applied in a communicative context
• Classes are capped at 16 learners who are matched according to their level
• Optional study groups will be formed, providing additional practice outside of class time
• As members of ACAF, all learners can benefit from additional speaking opportunities throughout the year.

Program 1:  Online classes

This is the traditional model of courses ACAF has offered for the past three terms. The fall 2026 session will run for 13-weeks from September 14 to December 19, 2026. Classes will be capped at 16 learners.

Class schedule:

  • 2 sessions/week (Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday) 7-9:00 pm (new times)
  • 1 session/week (Saturday) 9-11:30 am or 12 – 2:30 pm

Fees for the 13-week fall term:

  • $285 for 2 sessions/week
  • $190 for 1 session/week

Program 2: Small group intensive learning cells (NEW!)

Learning to speak accurately in French takes considerable practice combined with regular corrective feedback by a trained instructor. ACAF is aware that there many learners who plan to take the TEF or TCF for immigration purposes, who may be soon evaluated by the federal government, or who may be seeking employment in a bilingual setting in the near future. In response to this growing need, ACAF is pleased to launch a new program for highly motivated learners who will meet online daily (Monday – Friday) for 1 hour per day in the evening. This program will be organized in 4-week sessions (5 hours per week, total of 20 hours). Our first session will run from September 14 to October 9, 2026.

  • Maximum 5 learners per learning cell (= constant access to the teacher)
  • Revision of group members every 4 weeks, to allow talented learners to move to a more advanced cell for the next month
  • Regular TEF/TCF/CSPS speaking test preparation during class time
  • Supplemental writing and listening assignments to be completed outside of class time will be assigned and corrected

Class schedule:

  • 1 hour per day, 5 days a week in the evening (from 6-9 pm – the exact time will be determined based on participants’ availability)

Fees (per 4-week session, 1 lesson/day, total 20 hours)

  • $195

Program 3:  In-person Saturday classes (NEW!)

ACAF is excited to launch an in-person option for learners who prefer a more traditional form of learning. Courses will be held at the Université de l’Ontario français located at 9 Lower Jarvis Street on Saturdays from September 19 to December 19 (no class will be held on Thanksgiving weekend). Classes will be 3 hours in length with an additional 1-hour online check-in during the week at a time that is convenient for all participants. Classes of a maximum of 14 learners will be formed based on the levels of participants.

Class schedule:

  • 3 hours per Saturday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (precise time TBD based on participant availability)
    • 1 hour online “check-in” organized each week, based on participant availability

Fees for the 12-week session:

  • $360

Included in the registration fee for all programs:

  • An original, creative learning resource with audio supports
  • Yearly membership to ACAF, including access to weekly conversation workshops
    • Initial evaluation (if required)
  • End of course evaluations in each area (speaking, listening, reading and writing) based on Canadian Language Benchmarks. A speaking evaluation will be conducted by an independent evaluator.
  • A certificate of completion providing the results of the evaluations.
